Enough is enough: it's time for a change

Abstract:
Razorback fans deserve better than this. Razorback players deserve better than this. And the UA deserves better than this.

It's time for the Houston Nutt era to come to an end. It's time for a change.

After all the e-mails, the text messages and the transfers, it's time....

I agree completely. I hope Houston Nutt and his "posse" doesn't get you fired for writing what needed to be written.

Thanks Bart,

It is way past time to rid ourselves of the "Dork" and as sad as the state of affairs has gotten on the Hill to my University of Arkansas, there is still time to make things right.

If John White has not lined up Jeff Long for the very purpose of firing Nutt and getting the football program back in the hands of a man of integrity and character, then White may need to join Broyles and Nutt in the unemployment line.

Frank was allowed to stay way too long. Had he retired in the early 90's like he should have at the ripe old age of 70 instead of 82, Razorback fans would be watching with amazement at the sight of Mitch Mustain carrying in the first of possibly two or more SEC trophies! (not 2nd place hardware either)

Instead, we as fans get to endure Nutt ruining McFadden's run for the Heisman with a gameplan that is as outdated as his recruiting.

Thanks for being bold enough to stand up and shout what nearly 95% of the Hog fans want to see happen.

Of course Frank said only 5% are upset, I think he has identified the wrong 5% (the uninformed).

Here is to hoping you get your wish and that a new coach takes the program to a higher level of play than what Nutt & Co. has given us.

Amen. This guy has done enough to wreck the once-proud Razorbacks program. It's time for 21st century thinking. Arkansas has the facilities and is developing the talent-base to compete in the SEC. Leadership -- rather, the lack of it -- is the only thing holding the football program back.

Outstanding. Finally someone in the print media has the balls to say it. Keep up the good fight, Bart.

Great article... but 1 correction is needed.

Nutt is actually 38-38 against SEC teams!

He is 38-36 (so far) in regular season plus 0-2 in SEC championship games (everyone remember our 'championship' in 2002 when we went to the SEC Champ game only because Bama was on probation and Auburn and LSU lost a tiebreaker to the hogs?)

Pitiful! Fire Nutt yesterday!

And, he's 38-38. Average.

Send him back to Boise where he was 4-7.

There are a few of us who will attempt to report or expose the truth.

Kudos to you Mr. Pohl. You have proven yourself to not be a pawn.

Now, if only we could be sure that Mr. Long is aware of the antics of Houston Nutt . . .

Thank you for having the guts to write what very few (if ANY) other sports reporters/writers will say - Nutt is a horrible football coach and an even worse OC!
The Razorbacks fan base is more divided than at any time in my 46 years of life and it is all because of Houston D. Nutt.
The Hogs are at the very bottom in football and will have to start rebuilding next year anyway, so why not start fresh and without all of the Nutt baggage?
I agree that it's time to TOTALLY clean house within our football program and removing Nutt is the perfect place to start!

Great article! We need more articles like this published in Arkansas.

Nutt should have no reason for losing this year. He has the best backfield in the country. He has the hand picked coaching staff that he wanted. So why the continued mediocrity???

Because that is the kind of coach he is and it is time for a change!

Yes! Finally a sports writer calls the 'Dork' out for being such a pampered, protected Bonehead coach.

Where are the other boot-licking journalists that get their marching orders from the corrupt BAC???
Both Houston and Danny Nutt appear to be without morals or INTEGRITY... Is the BoT completely blind?

This program deserves a massive house-cleaning NOW.
Yes, I'm an embarrassed UA_grad, and I would NOT hire these corrupt clowns to even sweep my shop floors... Bring in the NCAA to de-tox this sham !!!

I am tired of Houston Nutt's antics such as walking around like a peacock and flashing his 2nd place bling at the SEC media days like he is some kind of gansta. We might as well start buying USC gear because half of the offensive skill players will be from Arkansas in 2009. Kind of funny that we seem to be lacking in receivers and USC will have two 4-star receivers from Arkansas.

Good luck when you interview players and coaches after this column, Bart. You won't be getting another good quote all year. Probably should have held off on the fire until near the end of the season. You're also hurting your Traveler comrades who go down to the practice fields and have to file reports.

Should have waited a bit longer before printing this. Not disagreeing at all with your opinion, but just your timing professionally.

Great article. But in addition to the firing of Nutt, please U of A, do not name the field at RR
stadum Broyles Field. The Broyles Center is more than enough to honor Coach Boyles' legacy. I think Mr. Broyles is responsible more than anyone for letting HDN tear our program down to the new level in which we find ourselves. He should have fired HDN long ago. This coaching staff can not muster a mediocre passing game to complement the best running attack in america. We are wasting the best running back that college football has seen since Tony Dorsett. It is a travesty that a program the size of the U of A can not development quaterbacks. We have not had a bonafied QB since Clint(MJ was a wide receiver in qb's clothing). So what do we do? We run off the best qb in America.

Brilliant. Whatever the price to get rid of the plague that is Houston Nutt, I'm willing to pay it. If they have to raise the price of tickets by $20 to pay for a good coach I cool with that too. Burn it down and rise from the ashes if that is what it takes!!!

Some people used to accept the fact that Nutt isn't a great coach because they could justify believing it on the basis that he's a "good person." My grandfather was more than a "good person;" he was a great person. But I wouldn't want him coaching the Razorbacks because he would have no business doing so.

Fast forward - the problem for Nutt now is that very few people actually believe he's the "good person" they thought he was. After all, he has clearly lied and otherwise treating people poorly in regard to many things in the past, including but not limited to texts, emails, phone calls, relationships, recruits, parents, coaches, play-calling, etc., the most recent example being a bold-face lie about having spoken with SEC's Commissioner in regard to Danny Nutt's presence in the coaches' press box.

In other words, presently, very few people trust or otherwise like the guy anymore personally, and, for a mediocre-to-bad football coach, that's not where you want to find yourself as a college football coach, athletic department, or university.

Fire Nutt already; he's an overpaid, untrustworthy, mediocre, dork of a liability.

The author and those who have commented in his support above are an embarrassment to me as a Razorback fan. I'm sure some BCS program will soon offer Mr. Pohlman a seven figure contract to provide them with his brilliant hindsight coaching. You people obviously believe anything and everything you read on the internet. The courts are well founded in the dismissal of this crap at every turn. I fear that you people will get what you wish for. I remember the days of Jack Crowe and Danny Ford all too well. That's where you people are headed. Who would want to coach for fans like those above. If they're a good coach, they have alternatives. I don't want a $4,000,000 Nick Saban.

Houston Nutt gets his name dragged through the mud in the editorial section of just about every publication in this state, and you all really think he cares enough to make trouble for a writer at a school newspaper. I have a sinking suspicion that Houston Nutt does not in fact read the traveller, nor would he or his "posse" care. Questionable coaching record aside, all that is a achieved by all of this whining is to embarrass us in front of recruits, and put even more stress on the players, who already play in the toughest conference in the country.

I received my PhD from Arkansas in 1983. Ever since I returned to my country, I've never missed to follow the Razorbacks football and basketball, year in and year out. Except for the year that the Razorback won the hoops NCAA title in the nineties, I think the teams have not been couched to the level that will give them the chance to win the NCAA titles.

The low-risk type of offence as exercised by the teams can only guarantee the Razorbacks one thing ..... that is, they will win enough games to be invited for post-season games. My point is, to be the number one team, the coaching staff must be willing to put their heads on the chopping block by introducing optimal mixture between low risk plays and high risk plays.

In football, the low-risk plays involve the running game, while the high-risk plays involve the passing game. When freshman quarterback, Mitch Mustain and Springdale couch came in, I tought Razorback can win the NCAA title in 2008 or 2009. But sadly, the Razorback continued to prefer the low-risk running game and benched Mitch Mustain. My analysis is that, even if the team plays the running game, a really good quarterback is still needed. A good quarterback may not be synonymous to big yardage, but to having the ability get a drive going by getting the first downs. Looking at this year's schedule, I think, Razorbasks could have won the Auburn and Alabama games with one or two more first downs.

In basketball, the high risk play is the three point shot from the perimeter. This year's team have done no better that last year's team in this area. I cannot see how Arkansas can progress beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament, if they ever get there at all. Losing to Applachian State and Providence, supports my contention and skepticism. Just review how Florida won the NCAA title last year. Whenever UCLA came close, they hit the three points from the perimeter. To give another example, we can look at how the US national teams being beaten by countries from South America and Europe. The dreaded Dream Teams of the nineties have gone. It was all done through the three point play from the perimeter.

Therefore, the changes in head coaches are timely and welcomed.
