Universities consider concealed-carry laws

Abstract:
After the North Illinois University and Virginia Tech shootings, college students must not only worry about the rising cost of tuition or whether they failed their math tests, but also whether their campuses are safe.

This need for safety has some people advocating permission to carry concealed weapons on campus, which is not permitted at the UA....

Statistics indicate that in Arkansas, there's a small fraction of people who---ARE POLICE. The likelihood of one of those people being in the right place at the right time is slim

I have my concealed carry permit, and I don't think this article fairly covers everything that is required to get one. I had to go to a class with a licensed instructor for 8 hours. Then, I had to go prove that I am proficient in handling my firearm. This included shooting from various distances and positions to show accuarcy in aiming. Then, my instructor notorized the applicaton. I mailed my application and 150 dollars to the state. They perform an FBI backgroud check using your fingerprints. A detailed personal history is completed. A letter was sent to the police in my town to approve my status as a good citizen. This took 4 months. I then finally got my permit. Permit holders on campus could very well save a life- maybe yours.

Concealed carry laws can save lives. Fourty eight states have concealed carry laws. You can carry in most public places, why not a college campus?

While Police do a good job, they are minutes away, when seconds count. Almost all of these mass killings have happened in "gun free" zones. Wake up America!

Isn't it funny? The university, businesses, federal government, and state governments are all claiming that thier rights are MORE important than thier citizen's and student's rights! The state claims they are disarming the students and citizens to PROTECT them, but then don't protect them. The deaths were all in UNARMED, ZERO TOLLERANCE, GUN FREE ZONES people! Businesses, University, and Governments have no rights, just responsibilities, which they are failing at miserably. Only PEOPLE HAVE RIGHTS. Remember this especially when it limits your's and my rights. No one has the right to stop me or you from carrying a gun openly or concealed. That's what the US Constitution is for, a direct LIMITATION on governments not citizens. Read the 2nd Amendment, remember it is what keeps American's free to enjoy the other nine amendment's rights. Therefore I will always carry despite objections and unconstitutional laws. Another thing, remember, what governments can give, they can take away, so when you go to the state and beg for the concealed permit remmber that you are GIVING the state the right to take it away too. States and the US federal governments do not "allow" me to carry a gun. God gave me the right to carry a gun at anytime from the moment I was born a citizen. Neither the states, the Federal government, or any University can abrogate my natural right to carry a gun and defend myself from criminals. Anyone who disagrees can go unarmed just like all slaves do.

I will never bow a knee to anyone. I served in the US Army defending this country's Constitution and the citizen's freedom. I will never give freedom up or fail to defend it from anyone or entity!

I took an oath to defend the US Constitution from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. I follow my oaths.

Signed, Texas Free Man

Anticarriers:

Passage of this will not increase the number of guns in society. It will merely add to the number of physical settings in which screened and tested law abiding citizens can keep and bare a significant disinsentive to criminal attack.

Not a trained killer

I'm sorry, but I think this is appalling. I am not willing to kill another individual, even if my life depended on it. What is this? The wild west? I mean, I am not "dogging" anyone who wants to carry a gun, but I just don't want those people in my life, and if the University were to allow concealed weapons on campus, that just makes me think that a lot more people are willing to kill than we think. Does it give them power, to know that if they had the chance to kill they would? I don't know.............this makes me ill.

i always kind of thought anybody willing to man up enough to want to stop a gun wielding maniac doesn't need a gun to do it. this is not about saving lives when seconds count, its about guys stroking their egos. people who go on killing sprees and then off themselves do not care if the person sitting next to them might have a gun and might try to stop them. it's just moar lulz when they have opponents.

To "not a trained killer" and "pewpew". I am not overly anxious to have to use my gun, however, if it comes down to me or the other person, then I want to give myself every chance I have to make it home to my husband at the end of the day. That's right, I'm not a gun toting maniac, or some tough guy looking to stroke my ego. I a liberal, I am a member of NOW, I will be attending law school in the fall, I am a wife and future mother, I am a woman who wants to protect myself from attack. Would a small, 5'5" woman be able to "bull dog" an attacker? Likely not. Will my .380 bullet stop him? Pretty damn sure.

Here is something to ask yourself: If you are sitting in class and someone bursts in with a gun and starts shooting people at point blank, and the gun is pointed at your head, what would you want to happen? Someone take out that shooter, or give your life to senseless violence and be another statistic on the news?

This isn't about ego or bragging rights because a person carries a gun. The whole point is to even the playing field. It's already been pointed out that almost all mass shootings take place in gun free zones. This happens because the shooter knows that police response time at best is 3 to 5 minutes and sometimes as many as 15 to 20. It gives them ample time to kill as many people as they can before the possibility of an armed response. Sadly real men who are willing to confront an armed attacker while being unarmed themselves are few and far between. That is what concealed carry is about. If you see me on the street you'd never know that i'm carring a gun unless someone started shooting. When that happens you'll be glad i've got it, cause even if you don't believe in killing in self defense i do. I'd even kill to save people like you. Think about it.
