When people think about a concert, musical performance comes to mind. One could imagine a singer, musical instrument, etc., but the Williams duo have their own version of how a concert is to be performed.
Both Grammy award-winner Lucinda Williams and her father, world-famed poet Miller Williams, will perform Tuesday in "Poetry Sung...Poetry Said."
The concert will take place at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville at 7 p.m. tonight.Neighbor and friend Michael Thomas remembered how the Williamses traditionally gathered on Christmas Eve to perform poetry and music.
"This is how it all started," Thomas said. Thomas is also a volunteer with the Friends of Fayetteville Public Library, the organization that is presenting "Poetry Sung...Poetry Said."
Miller Williams, named by Phillip Martin as the "Hank Williams of American poetry," has been a professor of English and foreign languages for more than 30 years at the UA.
Miller Williams has been awarded more than 20 international awards and prizes. His poetry is taught at both Harvard and Princeton Universities.
One of his most notable achievements includes being the inaugural poet for the second inauguration of former president William Jefferson Clinton.
He has written 30 books, including the recently released "The Ways We Touch."
"I believe that every poem should begin as the poet's and end as the reader's," Miller Williams said about his work and the connection with readers.
Voices International, a multi-national editorial board, named Miller Williams "One of the 20 best poets in the world now writing in English."
Miller Williams moved his family around throughout the South and to other countries like Mexico City and Santiago, Chile.
Daughter Lucinda Williams said she feels that this traveling instilled a restlessness in her that continues to exist today. She has lived in San Francisco; Los Angeles; Austin, Texas; Houston; New York and Nashville, Tenn.
