The Arkansas Lady'Back soccer squad was impressive this past weekend in disposing of Louisiana Tech 6-0 on Friday night and defeating Centenary 1-0 in overtime on Sunday.
"We had a pretty good weekend," said Arkansas head coach Gordon Henderson. "Sunday's game [vs. Centenary] was more of a defensive struggle, because we saw a different look and I took it as a sign of respect of our offense.
Freshman goalie Britni Williams was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after making six saves against 16 shots and allowing no goals over the weekend.
"She [Williams] was flattered to win the award," Henderson said. "She's an imposing figure in the box and really commands the game when she is in."
Missouri State will visit Fayetteville this Friday night before the Lady'Backs cap off the weekend by hosting Jacksonville State.
Volleyball still struggling
The Lady'Backs suffered two losses over the weekend at home to Ole Miss and No. 24 LSU to open up conference play. "Well, I can say that this past weekend was a little disappointing," Arkansas head volleyball coach Chris Poole said.
Arkansas started 6-1 on its season before dropping three consecutive non-conference matches before Southeastern Conference play began. With five consecutive losses, the pressure starts to mount as the Lady'Backs hit the road this weekend to take on Mississippi State and Alabama.
"We are still very, very young," Poole said. "But the kids still believe in themselves, and we have to get more consistent with our play. We can't have the unforced errors and mistakes come when the game is on the line."
Alabama, the Lady'Backs' Sunday opponent, was the preseason favorite to win the SEC West, and is already 2-0 in conference play after defeating Kentucky and Tennessee.
"Alabama is very good and we know nothing will come easy this weekend," Poole said. "We just want to get better and make plays like we know how and limit the mistakes and I think we'll be alright."
Softball hosts Fall Festival
The Arkansas Lady'Back softball team is coming off a 3-0 mark in the Arkansas Fall Festival last weekend. They defeated Connors, Evangel, and Carl Albert in dominating fashion.
"We pitched well as a team," Arkansas head coach Jamie Pinkerton said. "We hit .424, which is solid, and so I thought we had a successful opening weekend."
Senior Katy Henry was nothing but spectacular on the mound against Evangel on Saturday. She struck out 11 batters, including eight in a row, in just four innings of work to pick up the win.
The Lady'Backs will continue fall play this weekend by hosting the Lady'Back Fall Festival. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Texarkana, and Tulsa are the teams scheduled to take part.
