Devan Ohl

Issue date: 10/10/07 Section: Life & Style
You have only been on a date for a few minutes, but you already know it is a disaster. The awkward silence is so intense that you are afraid he can hear you wishing you were somewhere else - anywhere else. You fiddle with the red and white-checkered tablecloth and glance around the room nervously, trying to avoid eye contact.

Suddenly, the room fills with the sound of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "How Long."

It's your phone.

"Hello," you answer, filled with relief.

A familiar voice responds: "Congratulations, you are with the dumbest guy on campus."

"Oh my gosh, is everyone okay?" You manage in your best shocked and concerned tone.

There is silence on the other end.

"Okay, I'll be there right away!"

You turn to your date, who has a smudge of ketchup on his cheek: "I'm sorry, I've got to go."

Then you bolt.

No, its not your best friend calling to save you from another blind date - it's the "Bad Date Call" you scheduled using College.com.

This is only one of a proliferation of helpful functions offered by the newest online community for college students, which launched on Sept. 3.

"When Facebook alienated their core user, the college student, and opened up their network, we saw this as a huge opportunity to provide a secure online social environment for college students," said Jon Davidman, president of College.com. "Facebook, like MySpace, wants to be everything to everyone, where we, as our name states, want to be everything for the college student."

The site offers a variety of sections - students, academics, news, messages, blogs, events, groups, and Greeks - each providing the expected functions as well as a many innovative options.

Academics

This section allows users to upload their course schedule, browse and rate professors, and even create and share online flash cards.

"Our academic section is comprised of a classroom portal that allows students to join their 'virtual' class and see other students in their same class," Davidman said.

this is actually intended for whoever wrote this article, Devan Ohl, but if anyone else can answer it, that would be fine.
The article states the ringtone is "How Long" by the red hot chili peppers. (Continued…)

Well, the song is Otherside, but I was more quoting its phrase "how long" as a pseudo-title to play on the uncomfortable nature of the date.
