Fall intramurals in full swing

Molly Morrison

Issue date: 10/10/07 Section: Life & Style
The fall season of intramurals is in full swing and the HPER is offering a wide array of activities including soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor volleyball, putt putt, racquetball and flag football, to name a few.

The schedule for fall intramural sports features 17 sports and activities. The schedule has also changed from years past in that soccer will lead off the intramural season instead of flag football, and indoor volleyball has been moved to the fall. Co-Rec basketball was once a fall sport but will now be played in the spring semester.

The HPER also is offering a new "sport" this fall - an Xbox 360 Halo tournament will take place in late October.

Director of Intramural and Recreational Sports at the UA, Bill Mock, said the reason for the change in scheduling this semester was due to the delayed sorority rush at the university this year and the overwhelming popularity of flag football amongst sororities.

"We wanted to accommodate women's rush this year because we didn't want to lose women's participation in flag football," Mock said.

Mock hopes to bring more sports into the intramural program to accommodate more peoples' interests; however, the program is running out of facilities to house all of activities they are currently providing, he said.

"We might have to put a cap on some of the sports that don't receive as much participation in order to bring in new sports," said Mock.

Information on each semester's activity offerings can be found on the intramural Web site under the schedule/results page or on the second floor of the HPER.

Intramural sports at UA are one of the most popular student activities on campus. The program allows the students, faculty and staff to participate in recreational sports in a competitive and fun atmosphere.

Athletic and non-athletic recreational programs are offered through the HPER. Everything from flag football to bowling is offered to meet each student's particular area of interest, according to the intramural Web site Imrs.uark.edu.
