A fire extinguisher sprinkler head broke off, sounded a fire alarm and caused water damage in a room at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house slightly after 9 p.m. Wednesday night, the UA Police Department spokesperson said.
"A fire sprinkler head broke off and wetted a lot of the third floor," said UAPD public information officer Gary Crain. The fire department had to turn off the water supply to stop the flow into a room of the house, he said.
The water from the sprinkler damaged drywall, a fluorescent light and the carpet in the house, and the sprinkler head needs to be replaced. An officer at the scene estimated the damages to amount to about $200, he said.
"It looks like an equipment malfunction," Crain said of the damaged sprinkler head. There was no indication of blunt-force trauma to the fire-extinguishing device, he said.
The UAPD will not further investigate the cause of the malfunction, Crain said. "Wayne Brashear [occupational safety coordinator] will continue the investigation."
