In the following weeks, the UA will be filled with Homecoming events promoting school spirit. This year's Homecoming theme will be Razorback Rodeo; Greek houses, Registered Student Organizations and residence halls have been paired together and will compete in Homecoming events, earning points for their efforts in the activities and competitions.
Senior Aaron Strobel is the Director for the Alumni Relations for Associated Student Government. The Homecoming Selection Committee is comprised of fifteen people from across campus in different organizations, Strobel said.
Various RSOs nominated girls for homecoming queen. The girls then filled out 2-page applications with basic information and short-answer essays. The Homecoming Selection Committee accepted and reviewed those applications for homecoming queen.
"This is the biggest and best application pool that we've had," Strobel said.
Candidates were given a score between one and 100. The top 25 girls were invited for interviews with the Homecoming Selection Committee, which narrowed the pool to the top 10. These 10 were interviewed by the senior football players, who narrowed the list to the top five. The top five girls are all on the homecoming court and will attend most homecoming events, including the pep rally, parade and crowning ceremony at half-time during the Homecoming game.
All students can vote for the Homecoming queen. Voting begins at 9:30 a.m. today and will continue through 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. To vote, students can go to http://vote.uark.edu/ and follow the instructions.
The queen will be announced at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, on the steps of Old Main.
Senior Hannah Davidson is the Homecoming Chair for the Student Alumni Board.
Hannah Davidson hosted two campus-wide meetings during the planning stages, where student organizations were given information and a chance to give input for homecoming events. "We're excited about Homecoming," Davidson said. "Without the 13 SAB committee members, I could not have prepared homecoming."
Membership in Real Razorbacks will be incorporated into points this year in order to raise awareness about the alumni house. Membership is $15 to join and students can sign up for Real Razorbacks at all the events throughout the week.
However, organizations that make Real Razorbacks membership mandatory for their members in order to gain more participation points will have points deducted.
The idea of incorporating Real Razorbacks was to enhance the homecoming experience, but there was some recent misunderstanding over its involvement.
"It was never meant to benefit the alumni house specifically," Davidson said. It was only meant to benefit the students." She said the controversy has been cleared. Students who sign up will receive a glass cup, a T-shirt and laminated card for local benefits and discounts.
