The Lady'Backs hosted No. 7 Georgia and North Texas over the weekend for the first swimming meet of the year and picked up a commanding 210-90 victory over North Texas, but fell to Georgia, 168-127.
"I'm very proud of the young ladies," Arkansas coach Jeff Poppell said. "They did a fantastic job of competing this afternoon. It's a much better start than I could have ever dreamed of for the first meet of the season."
Freshman Katie Kastes helped the Lady'Backs by winning three events in the process of breaking a school record, as she won the 200 butterfly with the time of 2:01.63.
Kastes also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.26 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.90.
Madison Palmer also stepped up for the Lady'Backs; she finished with two top finishes in diving when she scored 283.70 on the one meter and 286.85 on the three meter.
Arkansas finished first in the 200 freestyle relay and placed fourth in the 400 medley relay.
"To be able to have that type of success the very first competition of the season is just tremendous," Poppell said. "Those are types of performances we would expect either midway through the season or maybe at the end. The fact that we're starting off that well is great."
