The Arkansas Lady'Backs completed a weekend sweep of two Southeastern Conference East teams as they upset No. 5 Florida on Friday before knocking off the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon. With the pair of victories, the Lady 'Backs improved to 10-10, including 4-6 in SEC play.
"Overall, we played a balanced match with very few let downs," Arkansas head coach Chris Poole said. "We gave up a couple of mini runs but were able to fight through those and get the win. We challenged the team between games two and three to control the tempo, and we did a good job with that."
Arkansas was hitting on all cylinders in the win over South Carolina as they combined for a .413 hitting percentage.
Freshman Heather Royal led the way, posting 15 kills, and also hit at a staggering .520 clip. She also came up with eight digs and three block assists in the victory over the Gamecocks.
Senior Jessica Dorrell continued her stellar play on the way to SEC Player of the Week honors by earning 11 kills in the South Carolina win. She hit .348, while also adding three service aces and eight digs.
Freshman Sarah Freudenrich also continued her outstanding play with a team-high seven blocks.
The first game featured many long rallies and superb digs, but it was Arkansas who controlled the pace for most of the day. The game was close, but Arkansas never surrendered a lead, something that had plagued it through much of this season.
Arkansas hit .390 while holding South Carolina to a .140 hitting percentage. The Gamecocks were unable to record a block in the first frame.
The Gamecocks, however, managed to take a lead in the second game, and were up by as many as four before Arkansas' Dorrell stepped in and nailed three service aces to regain momentum and finish off the visitors.
In the third and final game, the Lady 'Backs controlled the entire frame. South Carolina couldn't really get anything going offensively, and Arkansas limited its unforced errors and played hard-nosed and aggressive on offense. Limiting these errors is something that Poole has harped on for much of this season.
They also hit a phenomenal .529 in the final frame while only recording a single hitting error.
Arkansas hits the road this weekend as they visit No. 18 LSU Friday before battling Ole Miss Sunday in Oxford, Miss.
