Chancellor John A. White welcomes A.P.J. Abdul-Kalam, former president of India, who spoke to students and faculty about nanotechnology and society. Kalam addressed a packed auditorium in the Reynolds Center Friday afternoon.

The former president of India gave a lecture at the UA titled "Dynamics of Peace and Prosperity" at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 in the Reynolds Center auditorium.

A.P.J. Abdul-Kalam, who spoke as part of Chancellor John A. White's Distinguished Lecture Series, was greeted by a nearly full auditorium, and many of the Indian people present seemed excited to see their former president of 2002-2007.

"I am excited to be in the presence of such a unique person involved in both science and politics," said Anita Mysore, a UA graduate.

By the time Abdul-Kalam entered, the aisles were filled with people in standing ovation. The event began with a few words from the chancellor, who praised Abdul-Kalam for his many accomplishments, including his expertise in rocket propulsion and his plan for India's 2020 technology vision.

"In visiting India and hearing Dr. Abdul-Kalam, I was impressed with his desire to empower students," White said. "He truly exhibits a passion for technological movement starting with the education of the youth. I challenge you all to recognize what you as students can learn from his quest for peace and prosperity."

"The recipient of 30 honorary doctorates, Abdul-Kalam has been recognized by many universities and other institutions for his contributions to his field and for his dedication to excellence in education," White said.

Abdul-Kalam greeted the audience by saying, "This is a beautiful city with beautiful people and beautiful minds."

His speech consisted of his history in studying many philosophies regarding peace. He mentioned philosophers such as Plato and Gandhi and how their teachings of harmonious living equaled high productivity. He spoke of his continuous quest to implement these teachings into India's education system.

"Through the unity of minds we can achieve," Abdul-Kalam said. To further explain his theory, he asked the audience to repeat these words, "When there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is an order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world."
