From all corners of the UA campus, many are preparing for a day of competition, when spirit will rule Greek lawns, Barnhill Arena and the intramural fields. Banners will be hung, whistles will be blown and synchronized stomping will pound the sidewalk of Stadium Drive Thursday as the "Raze Your Pride," "AKA Unity Step Show" and "Pig Skin Classic Tournament" hit the campus for the 2007 UA Homecoming.
The Homecoming committee has been hard at work planning a celebration of spirit and competition for this year's Homecoming. Thursday is among the busiest days of homecoming week with three big events. Whether students prefer to show their spirit through banners, step dancing or 3-on-3 flag football, tomorrow's homecoming events will suit their tastes.
Campus-wide, banners will cover the many manicured lawns of Greek organizations, Registered Student Organizations and residence halls as "Raze Your Pride" takes over.
According to the online Homecoming Handbook, banners will be critiqued by a panel of judges on "creativity, overall quality and incorporation of the theme 'Razorback Rodeo.'" Banner sizes have to be equivalent to one full-size bed sheet and they must be painted vertically. To facilitate hanging, each banner must have grommets.
Although there was not an entry fee in the competition, all participants in the banner competition were required to turn in sketches by Sept. 21.
All banners must be in place by 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Later in the day, the annual "AKA Unity Step Show," hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha, will take place in Barnhill Arena. Fraternities and sororities will be decked out in their best gear and put their stepping skills to the test for the coveted prize of the ultimate step squad.
More than eight fraternities and eight sororities are battling it out in this year's event. Trophies will go to first, second and third place winners along with monetary gifts between $150 and $500, which will be donated to charity.
