"When Pigs Fly" is a barbecue and fundraiser for the Ozark Food Bank to help the 90,000 people in Northwest Arkansas who experience hunger on a daily basis. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until 10:30 p.m. tonight at the Fayetteville Town Center located on the square. Tickets are $50 and include dinner and drinks.
This is the third year "When Pigs Fly" has been a fundraising event for the Ozark Food Bank. Greg Spragg, executive vice president of merchandising for Sam's Club, is the keynote speaker this year. John Menzer, vice chairman of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., spoke at last year's event. Tyson, Del Monte Foods, Sara Lee, Continental Mills and J.B. Hunt also sponsor the event. Tyson will again supply some of the food this year, said Kelly Colebar of the Ozark Food Bank.
"The planning begins with the conclusion of the previous year's event," Colebar said. "Hunger is a daily challenge, and the people who are counting on us rely on the financial resources we receive during this event. People in our community are generous, but the number of people experiencing hunger is growing more quickly than we can handle."
When guests arrive at the fundraiser they will have time to look at and bid on silent-auction pigs, which have been decorated by members of the community, and purchase t-shirts before the barbecue dinner, which is catered by Penguin Ed's. Music throughout the evening will be provided by the L-Street Band. After dinner and the guest speaker, there will be a live auction of pigs with wings. The silent auction will close about 30 minutes after the live auction ends, Colebar said.
The planners of "When Pigs Fly" hope 400 people will come to the fundraiser, and that those 400 will tell 10 of their friends about the importance of the food bank..
"This is a cause that everyone can help with and be part of the solution," Colebar said.
Ozark Food Bank was founded in 1988 by a group of concerned citizens from local businesses and non-profit organizations. Its mission is "to fight hunger through advocacy, education, community awareness and the distribution of food to those in need," according to www.ozarkfoodbank.org. Before that the nearest Food Bank was in Fort Smith, so this food bank was founded to help Northwest Arkansas' people who are hungry and to solve wasted food problems, according to the Web site.
