A new era is about to begin in Arkansas Razorback basketball. Tonight, the 2007-08 season starts with the annual Red-White game as the Hogs hit the hardwood at 7:05 p.m.
Fans will have an opportunity to get an early taste of the Hogs' new style of play under first year head coach John Pelphrey.
"In this style, we spend as much energy as possible to wear down the other team and bring fatigue into play," Pelphrey said.
So far, there's no bigger proponent of the new game plan than senior swingman Sonny Weems, who played under a similar style in both high school and junior college.
"I'm a non-stop mover," Weems said. "I love this offense and I'm already making progress in it."
Weems was the second leader for the Hogs in scoring, rebounding and steals last year.
After fracturing his hand in August, Weems recently returned to full-speed practices and his hand doesn't seem to be bothering him.
"No big deal," Weems said. "Just a bump in the road."
On Thursday, Pelphrey announced that three players will miss the Red-White game. Michael Washington will be held out due to a continuing punishment for violating team rules.
Also, Patrick Beverly and Gary Ervin will miss the game because of unsuitable behavior off the court. Pelphrey said that he is unsatisfied with the progress of Beverly and Ervin in other parts of their lives away from basketball.
"I feel like these young men are good kids, and they've been working hard," Pelphrey said. "But I need more of an overachieving from them in other areas."
Beverly is the only non-senior returning starter from last year's team. As a freshman, he was voted Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Year. Recently, Beverly was voted to the preseason SEC All-Conference first team and was placed on the Wooden Award watch list.
"My thing is that you can't be one of the better players on a team, and then be a no-minute guy in other areas of your life," Pelphrey said.
