Freshman defender Sam Bolton stepped up for the Lady Razorback soccer team when injuries struck the defending backline. Bolton has taken full advantage of the playing time and has never looked back as a starter for the Lady'Backs.
"Sam Bolton has had an incredible season since she has stepped in for us," Arkansas coach Gordon Henderson said. "I've been very proud of her. There is a freshman that is taking that playing opportunity and playing better each game."
Bolton has started the last nine games for the Lady'Backs and helped by coming off the bench in four game prior to getting her first start. Bolton has acuminated 884 minutes for the Lady'Backs so far this season and even has four shots on goal playing as a defender.
Bolton, a Rogers native, had a stand out high school career as she won the Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year as a sophomore and helped lead her team to three straight state championships for the Rogers Lady Mounties.
"Bolton is a natural leader who strives to be the best in everything she does," Henderson said. "In doing so, she inspires those around her to do the same. She is infectious. A tremendous defender, she relishes the one-on-one challenges to impose her authority on opposing players.
"I wouldn't want to tackle her because she is absolutely fearless. As we harness that ability, Sam has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the Southeastern Conference. It is not often that defenders stand out in voting and awards. The fact that she was Gatorade State Player of the Year speaks volumes."
After playing No. 23 Florida on Thursday night, Bolton and the Lady'Back team will now travel to South Carolina for a noon start Sunday, which will be televised by Fox Sports Net and Sun Sports.
With only one game remaining after Sunday's contest, the Lady'Backs will be looking for a win as they are on the outside looking in at the SEC Tournament.
"It's going to be a big game," Henderson said. "I feel if we win or lose on Thursday, Sunday's game will determine if we make it to the SEC Tournament this year."
Henderson said the television exposure will be beneficial to the program.
"I think being on television in front of family, friends, potential recruits and alumni will be fantastic exposure," Henderson said. "I know our women will be ready to go in the game and play the best game they can."
