Zombies roamed outside their usual graveyard confines at the first annual Full Moon Horror Convention and Film Festival, which took place last weekend at the Little Rock Statehouse Convention Center.

The event attracted such horror luminosities as Linda Blair from "The Exorcist" and Shawnee Smith from the "Saw" franchise. In addition to celebrities, there were vendor expositions, special effects demonstrations and a truly frightening 3000-square-foot haunted house.

The festival began on Thursday evening, with a zombie walk. Volunteers had realistic gore and makeup applied by professional F/X artists who then set their creations free to roam the downtown streets of the River Market District.

Saturday's activities included a chance to meet horror movie stars such as Jeffrey Combs, of "The Reanimator," Michael Berryman of "The Hills Have Eyes" and P.J. Soles from the notorious cult classic "I Spit On Your Grave."

Attendees were also encouraged to donate blood at Red Cross' "Vein Drain" mobile booth.

Later that afternoon, Imagine!, a professional special effects company, demonstrated how to design and apply zombie effects and showcased visual wizardry from horror movies. The group also answered "How'd they do that?" questions from the audience. Other attractions included live music, magicians and costume contests.

"We're excited about this convention; it's the first time something like this has happened in Arkansas," said local residents Matt and Ashley Childers. "We've been planning this weekend for months. It's great to see all the old school actors from some of our favorite movies."

As the convention wound down in the afternoon people made plans to start their evening at Juanita's, where Michale Graves, lead singer of the Misfits played a rousing set. The event ended at Market Street Cinema with a midnight screening of the only uncut 35 mm print of "The Reanimator." The screening's highlight came when both the movie's star, Jeffrey Combs, and director, Stuart Gordan attended.

Market Street Cinema was also the site of a film festival of various short horror films were screened and judged. The winner received a distribution contract through Full Moon Features. The event was sponsored by both Green Grass Entertainment and Cox Communications.
