G. David Gearhart will assume the position of UA chancellor July 1. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved his nomination to become the fifth UA chancellor during their meeting Friday in Little Rock.

"It is indeed a great honor and privilege to be named the chancellor of the University of Arkansas, and I want to thank President Sugg and the Board of Trustees for the faith and confidence you have shown in me," Gearhart said, at the Board of Trustees meeting. "I pledge to you every ounce of energy in my body to work as hard as I can for the betterment of our university."

Gearhart pledged to faculty, staff and students during his speech to work hard in providing the resources and support the UA needs to carry out its mission.

"At the University of Arkansas our ultimate purpose is to improve the human condition, to make life better for our citizens and our state and to contribute to the general welfare of our nation," he said.

One of his challenges as chancellor will be to provide resources to keep the reputation of the UA, while at the same time to continue keeping the university an affordable place, he said during the meeting.

"I realize that is not an easy challenge, but it is one that I embrace with vigor," he said.

Gearhart, 55, has been vice chancellor for university advancement since 1998. He was recommended for the new position by UA System President ?B. Alan Sugg after Chancellor John A. White announced earlier this month he would be stepping down.

Gearhart, a native of Fayetteville, received two degrees from the UA.
