UA senior Stacy Lewis fired a four-under 68 and leads the 2008 Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico after the first round Sunday.
Lewis' 68 helped sixth-ranked Arkansas to a tie for third with an opening round 296 at the Coca Beach Golf Club. Play continues today and tomorrow.
"It was a really good effort today," Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. "I saw a lot of good things out there. [Lewis] continues to play good golf. She had three birdies in a row on two, three and four and then two more on nine and 10. She just missed a put on 11 to go six-under for the day."
In addition to Lewis, Arkansas got good play from freshman Kelli Shean who carded a 75. Shean is tied for 29th overall. Sophomore Tiffany Phelps counted a 76 and is tied for 38th, followed by junior Lucy Nunn who counted a 77 and is tied for 51st. Sophomore Alexandra Schulte is tied for 69th with a first-round 79.
"[Shean] really played well today," Estes-Taylor said. "It was really windy and she made some good adjustments on the cross winds. [Phelps] birdied her last two holes coming in to get to 76 and finished strong.
Southeastern Conference rival Alabama is atop the field after a first-round 293. They are tied with TCU, who was also five-over on the par 72, 6,168-yard course. Arkansas is tied with Florida State in third with 296 followed by LSU and Central Florida who are tied for fifth at 297. Georgia is seventh with 298 and South Carolina, Kent State, Tennessee and Purdue are tied at 299 to round out the top 10.
