The UA provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs has announced his intention to resign from his current position, according to a press release. Smith will step down June 30, the same day as Chancellor John A. White's last day as chancellor.
Bob Smith will have served under White for eight years on his resignation date.
"With the appointment of Chancellor-Designate [G. David] Gearhart, it was time to assess ?my situation, and it was my choice to move onto a faculty position," Smith said.
"I have been most fortunate to work with a partner like Bob Smith these past eight years," said UA Chancellor John A. White in a press release.
"The transformation of this university would not have been possible without his hand on the tiller of the flagship. He guided the 2010 Commission, helped revitalize the University of Arkansas Press, dramatically increased external funding for research, recruited outstanding deans for our schools and colleges and enabled the university enrollment to grow while improving both our diversity and the overall quality of our student body.
"These are just a few of the accomplishments during his time as provost," White said in a press release.
Smith is stepping down from his administrative post to serve the UA as a faculty member in the department of chemistry and biochemistry.
"There, I will be pursuing teaching, research and service akin to other members of the UA faculty, and I also hope to make some special contributions to the mentoring of younger faculty," he said.
Smith said he will miss most the opportunity to be so broadly involved with the university.
"I will miss the wonderful staff members I work with daily in the Provost Office, including Nancy Talburt [vice provost for academic affairs], Kathy Van Laningham [vice provost for planning and director of the Office of Institutional Research], Linda Dizney [executive assistant to the provost], Kathie Biondi [administrative assistant] and Cindy Morley [administrative assistant]," Smith said.
