Provost Bob Smith steps down

As UA provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Bob Smith is the chief academic officer for the university, overseeing academic affairs policy development and 10 colleges and schools, according to the Provost Office Web site. Smith also oversees several other academic units, including the Army ROTC, Air Force, Teaching and Faculty Support Center, and the offices of institutional research and summer session.
Smith earned his bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical sciences from St. John's University in New York, and he earned his master's and doctoral degrees in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Michigan, according to the Web site.
He began his career teaching medicinal chemistry at the University of Iowa, where he was an associate and assistant professor of medicinal chemistry, according to the Web site. He also served as director of the Drug Dynamics Institute and as James E. Bauerle Professor at the University of Texas at Austin before he was appointed dean of the College of Pharmacy at Washington State University.
Smith served for more than 10 years as vice provost for research and dean of the graduate school at WSU. Before coming to the UA, he served as the vice provost for research and graduate education and dean of the graduate school at the University of Connecticut.
At UConn, Smith had responsibility for research oversight at Storrs and the regional campuses and graduate education across the UConn system, which included biomedical graduate programs at the health center in Farmington, Conn., according to the Web site.
Smith, a native of New York, has authored or co-authored more than 280 published articles and eight books, including "Where You Stand is Where You Sit: An Academic Administrator's Handbook," which was published by the UA Press in 2006, according to the Web site.
