The man accused of killing a UA student Sunday has not yet been transported to Fayetteville from Oklahoma, but it does not appear that he will fight extradition, the Washington County prosecuting attorney said.
"It is my understanding that he is going to waive [his rights for extradition]," John Threet said.
"Right now, he is charged with first-degree [murder]," he said.
Those charges could change prior to his arraignment, for which a date has not been set, Threet said. Initially, a first-degree murder charge was issued to obtain a warrant.
Fayetteville police arrested Zachariah Scott Marcyniuk in connection with the apparent homicide of 24-year-old UA English student Katharine M. Wood, according to a Sunday afternoon press release from the Fayetteville Police Department.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer took Marcyniuk into custody 31 miles from the border of Texas about 5 p.m. Sunday after he stopped Marcyniuk for speeding.
FPD officers discovered Wood's body at the Colonial Arms Apartments at 1211 North Leverett Avenue after they responded to a 7:21 a.m. 911 call from one of the complex's residents.
Marcyniuk said he'd done something bad to Wood, but doesn't remember anything because he blacked out.
"I think I hurt her real bad," he told his parents before fleeing Fayetteville, according to a police affidavit.
Sean Hamley, whose apartment is upstairs and halfway down the complex from Wood's, called to say he woke up to the sound of a woman screaming, according to police records.
Officers found a purse outside the apartment upon their arrival. The information inside the purse led them to check an apartment where the owner of the purse was believed to reside, according to a press release from the FPD.
The officers received no response, and after they checked the interior of the apartment, they discovered Wood's body in the bathtub, the victim of a violent struggle, according to the affidavit. The circumstance of Wood's death appeared suspicious, given the information supplied by Hamley and the purse found outside, according to the press release.
