Although she became known around the nation as Katharine Wood, another murder victim, her friends will always remember her as Katie - a spontaneous, witty, strong, eccentric artist, writer and friend.
"She was a writer, an artist, a daughter and a friend. But she was more than that," said Dalal Sakaan. "Eccentric - she would be proud to describe herself as that."
"I remembered this one time I went over to Katie's apartment and she was ironing her clothes with her flat [hair] iron," Sakaan said. "I just looked at her, but she said it worked because it was the perfect size and [the flat iron] fit anywhere."
Wood was found dead in her residence at Colonial Arms Apartments on North Leverett Avenue Sunday morning after the Fayetteville Police Department received a call reporting a woman's scream.
"I miss everything about her. I'm not ready to let go," Sakaan said.
Wood was majoring in English and art at the UA.
"There's only one way to describe her - 'artsy-fartsy,'" Sarah Conley said.
She loved coffee and art, Conley said.
"When you were around her, you always felt like drawing, painting or writing. I write for a living and I find it hard to write without her."
Conley and Wood met in 2002 when Conley was Wood's Resident Assistant in Reid Hall. "She was an artistic girl in a dorm full of sorority girls, and I made sure to make friends with her."
Wood was really happy. She never let herself get down.
"She was an incredibly creative and strong person." Conley said. "Do you remember those 'What Would Jesus Do?' bracelets? Well, if you knew Katie, you would ask yourself, 'What would Katie do?'"
Wood would not let anything discourage her, and she always approached her problems head-on, Conley said.
"You would feel strength coming from her."
HER FAVORITES
"My friend Anna and I saw all the little things she left around the café. Random notes, her CD's," said Bre Elliott, Hastings manager and friend. "She really loved the Beastie Boys."
