For graduating seniors

Great front-page story on the steps graduating students take to apply for graduation and to collect all of the nice things that go along with graduation.

There was one important step I did not see, however: If you are graduating this spring (roughly 2 months from now), have you started your job search yet? Have you talked to a Career Counselor, attended a Career Fair or prepared your resume?

Maybe you plan to attend graduate school. Is your application in process? If not, you might want to add that to your "to-do list".

The article says graduating could cost from $500 to $2000. If you think that's expensive, what about not having a job when your student loans come due?

Consider this letter either good advice or an invitation to visit your Career Center. Either way, congratulations on your success.

No respect, biased reporting

The Feb. 27 issue of the paper, which highlighted the recent community service activity of Alpha Chi Sigma, reminded me of a problem this student newspaper has: biased news reporting.

It seems social fraternities and sororities get no respect from The Arkansas Traveler when it comes to community service and philanthropic activities. Social fraternities and sororities, along with their respective Greek Councils, on this campus selflessly give thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of community service hours and philanthropic dollars to local and national non-profit organizations every year.

Yet, does the Traveler feel this is worthy of front-page news? No. Does this deserve the attention of the Traveler? Yes.

Twenty percent of the student population belongs to a social fraternity or sorority. That is a big swath of the student body that is left out of this "award-winning" newspaper.

So, you may ask yourself: "What does it take for a social fraternity and sorority to grab the attention of the Traveler?" Well, after reviewing past issues of the Traveler, it seems to be bad press. Is that fair? I don't think so.

The Traveler has every right to report bad news, yet at the same time, it should have the obligation of reporting the good that students do on this campus. And quite frankly, the Traveler is not talking about the good that twenty percent of our student body is doing.

So, next time the social Greeks give you a call to let you in on a community service or philanthropic activity, give us the respect we deserve and report on it.

Support Missouri hog plates

Upon graduating from the UA, we become ambassadors to our school. As alumni we can help improve our alma mater for current and future students by promoting our school spirit at our new jobs and in our new towns.

To help people from Missouri show their Razorback Spirit, the St. Louis and Tri-State (Joplin area) Alumni Chapters have applied for, and been approved to have, specialized state license plates with a Hog emblem. Anybody with a car registered in Missouri can sign up for a Specialty Hog Plate. The proceeds from the program are being used fund scholarships for students from Missouri to attend the UA.

During the approval process, some of the Missouri legislators took notice of our application and are actively pursing legislation to keep us, or other out-of-state universities, from receiving specialized license plates. We are racing to reach 200 applications to start the production process of the license plates prior to the passing of this legislation, and we are more than halfway there.

Once the production process has begun, it will not be stopped. Help us put Razorbacks on Missouri License plates by visiting www.arkalum.org/roadtothehill

Complaining of bias because a story about a frat/sorority didn't make the FRONT page of the local campus rag doesn't make frat/sororities look like spoiled attention seekers at all. (Continued…)
