Dickson Street will be stepping up a level on their rock shows this week. Although a few prominent bands and little- known up-and-comers stop by Dickson to rock George's, The Gypsy or any other place, a few bands next week really push the label of up-and-comers to a new high. However, the disappointing part of this is that both up-and-comers playing Dickson this week are playing on the same night.
Minnesota rock band Dropping Daylight - vocalist and pianist Sebastian Davin, guitarist Seth Davin, bassist Rob Burke, and drummer Allen Maier - will grace the stage at George's Majestic Lounge April 2 with Saving Abel. This show is part of Dropping Daylight's national tour with Sick Puppies, even though Sick Puppies will not be playing this show. Nevertheless, the show still promises to fulfill the needs of all who come.
"Our live show is very energetic. We put in 150 percent no matter how many people are there," Maier said. "When we are playing, we definitely put it all on the stage, and sometimes we're lucky if we all get off stage at the end of the show and don't throw up."
Even though Dropping Daylight's live show probably will leave concert goers winded, they might not think that from looking at the band and the instruments they sport. However, this piano-fronted rock band is not another Fray or OneRepublic (thank God). This band knows how to mix piano into a rock song and make it sound melodic, heavy and unique at the same time.
"We are a piano-fronted rock band," Maier said. "I'm sure a lot of people see the piano before the show and think 'oh man, another piano band,' but we have a heavier sound. But we're still poppy and catchy at the same time."
Dropping Daylight will finish 2008 out with several tours, including one with former "scene band" From First To Last and possibly a small club, co-headlining tour, Maier said. Because of the successful bands Dropping Daylight are touring with, it won't take long for the national rock scene to notice them.
