The Associated Student Government passed Resolution 31, opposing a change in the hours of the Stadium Drive parking deck beside the Union, during their Tuesday meeting. ?ASG does not support the extension of paid parking hours to continue from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., according to the resolution. ?

The parking deck has remained free after 5:00 p.m., and students, faculty, staff and Fayetteville residents are used to this policy, according to the resolution. ?

The Senate also discussed Resolution 32, titled "UA Fayetteville Tuition Increase Emergency Assistance Act of 2008."?

The resolution calls for ASG to endorse and campaign for the use of endowment funds by the university and the creation of more need-based scholarships to reduce the burden of upcoming tuition increases. ?

"Eventually, people are not going to be able to afford to go to college," said Sen. Jacob Holloway, one of the co-authors of the resolution.

The UA Board of Trustees March 28 approved an increase in UA tuition and fees.

ASG President Nate Looney attended the trustee meeting last week. Chancellor John White requested a five percent increase in tuition and a $2 fee per credit hour for facility maintenance, Looney said. ?

This increase would force students to face heavier financial burdens and would discourage lower-income students from attending the UA, according to the resolution. ?

Arkansas ranks as having the second highest poverty rate in the U.S., and poverty is a primary barrier to college attainment, according to the resolution. ?

UA tuition and fee rates ranked 29th among the 50 state flagship universities for the 2006-07 academic year, Looney said. ?

"If we are going to continue to offer a world-class education, it is important we remain competitive with other state schools," Looney said. ?

Using endowment funds would be a convenient method to reduce this year's tuition hikes, and other schools across the nation with large endowments are following the same procedure, according to the resolution. Looney said the endowments are earmarked for other purposes. ?

The problem is that ASG doesn't have the power to enforce the resolution. UA Parking is free to ignore it, and I'm sure they will, just the same way the math department ignored ASG about alternatives to modular math. (Continued…)

Adam, I am Senator Jonathan Powell. I am the Chairman of the ASG Parking and Transit Committee. The Parking and Transit Committee alone has done much to reform transit and parking this year. (Continued…)

The only thing I can think of is how ridiculous it would be to see an increase in hours of payment. Just effing ridiculous. Why stop there? Why shouldn't it be 24 hours a day? And double the price it is now? Better yet, why not make more spaces reserved and force people to buy daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly permits to park there? And triple the price of the tickets for people who park there without a permit! I suppose increasing the hours is one way to tap into those darn non-trad students who get by with not paying for parking by taking night classes! Can't forget to screw those people over like everyone else!

This campus is becoming less and less commuter friendly and less and less community friendly. (Continued…)
