Nine students were selected to perform in the Honors Recital hosted by the music department. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
Auditions for the recital took place in March, but preparations began many months before. Some students began working on their pieces in December or sooner, said Blaine Cunningham, one of the scheduled performers.
The selection panel for Sunday's recital consisted of Lisa Casey, horn professor at Missouri State University; Lourdes Montgomery, music director for St. Vincent De Paul Church in Rogers and John Ross, music composition professor at Pittsburgh State University.
Taking the stage Sunday afternoon will be Whitney Adams, Cunningham, Christopher Davis, Brian Glass, Luke Hubbard, Michael Kuhr, Oliver Molina, C.J. Morris, and Meisha Stewart, according to the press release.
"It is a great honor to have been selected for this recital," Cunningham said. "I have attended several Honors recitals at the UA in the past and was always impressed with the level of talent that has come through our music department over the years. I am excited to get to perform on a recital with so many fine musicians."
Cunningham earned his master's degree in tuba performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is now pursuing his Advanced Instrumental Performance Certificate, according to the event's program.
Cunningham will be performing a work entitled "Salve Venere, Salve Marte" by John Stevens, according to the program.
"It is an extremely demanding solo, requiring the use of the full range of my instrument," he said. "It has some very loud and exciting moments that I hope the audience will really enjoy."
Adams will perform unaccompanied movements of Benjamin Britten's "Six Metamorphoses," according to the program.
She is a senior and is graduating from the UA this semester with a bachelor's degree in oboe performance. She has performed with the University Wind Symphony, University Symphony Orchestra and the Ft. Smith Symphony, according to the program.
