Members of the UA Saxophone Chamber Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet will showcase their talents in concert at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
The performers for the recital are current music students of saxophone professor Stan Morris, who formed the original chamber ensemble in 1992, and will serve as the conductor for the ensemble, according to the press release.
The chamber ensemble focuses on presenting the saxophone as a "noble and expressive instrument." Such characteristics were the inspiration for the invention of the instrument by Adolphe Sax, according to the press release.
The recital will feature a combination of musical styles and genres while showcasing many members of the saxophone family.
"Most of the recital will be classical, but we will also be performing a few jazz pieces," said Jessica Carson, a sophomore music education major.
The chamber ensemble will commence the evening with "Fugue" by Girolamo Frescobaldi, "Serenade for Saxophones" by Walter Harley and "Allegro" from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by Wolfgang Mozart.
Members of the UA Saxophone Chamber Ensemble include Aaron Nolley, soprano; Stephen Sisemore and Chad Kelsey, alto; Jayme Spicer, tenor; Barrett Barker, baritone; and Mark Henderson, bass, according to the event's program.
The Saxophone Quartet will then perform "Bouree" from "Orchestral Suite No. 1" by J.S. Bach, "Andante" from "Symphony Number 5" by Franz Schubert, "Fugue No. 7" from "The Well-tempered Clavichord II" by Bach, and "Ballet du Roy pour Sonner Apres" by Michael Praetorius.
Carson will be playing baritone saxophone with the quartet. Other associates include alto members Chris Pemberton and Gelynda Johnson and tenor member Kory White, according to the program.
They will close their segment for the evening's recital with "Mississippi Rag" by W.H. Krell, according to the program.
Following the performance by the quartet, the chamber ensemble will reclaim the stage to perform "Sarabande" from "Pour le Piano" by Claude Debussy, "Aubade" by Walter Harley and Arthur Frackenpohl's "Two Rags for Saxophone Ensemble," according to the program.
Both groups have been preparing for Thursday's recital throughout the semester, Carson said.
"We are a really tight group and it makes rehearsals a lot easier, and I think it makes for a quality performance," Carson said. "These are people that I'm around all the time …it's fun getting to play with your friends."
Admission to the event is free and all are invited to attend.
