An illustrious career filled with songs placed on national sitcoms, hitting No. 1 on the AAA charts and another being included in a USA Today playlist has not fazed Boston soul singer Martin Sexton, who has embarked on a national tour which will visit George's Majestic Lounge tonight.

"[My greatest achievement] would have to be staying true to myself and to my heart, and, at the same time, providing my family with a good living and the world with honest art without the help of corporate America," Sexton said.

Although he has a long list of accomplishments, including being deemed by John Mayer as "the best live performer [he's] ever seen," according to a press release, 42-year-old Sexton does not seem like he is going to slow down any time soon.

With the release of his seventh studio album, Seeds, Sexton is stepping outside the box and using some of the gospel singers inside of himself, he said. In past albums featuring soul, he hired other singers; but for this album, he recorded all of the soul singing himself, Sexton said.

"Seeds is still pop, rock and soul music," Sexton said. "Everything I do is just a bunch of songs, but [Seeds] maybe tries to tap into 'follow your dreams you had as a kid' and paying attention to your heart."

Listeners and critics, along with their hearts, appear to be listening to Seeds. The first single off the album, "Happy," hit No. 1 on the AAA charts, and the second single, "Wild Angels," was also picked to be in a USA Today playlist after the album was released, according to a press release. Sexton even had his song "Diner" featured on the popular NBC sitcom "Scrubs" earlier this year. He also landed a spot on John Mayer's Mayercraft cruise, which featured several prominent musicians.

"The Mayercraft was fun. We ate a lot of good food and there was a lot of good music," Sexton said. "I got to see John again and play music with him, and that was cool."

Although Sexton usually tours with a full band, who are featured on Seeds, his current tour is strictly a solo performance, he said.
