The UA Associated Student Government discussed a resolution Tuesday supporting the expansion of need-based scholarships and grants. ?
Because of UA tuition increases, many students have trouble affording a college education, even while working full-time jobs, according to the resolution. ?
The resolution calls for the ASG Senate to support need-based programs, such as Access Arkansas, GO! Opportunities Grant and other comparable programs or those created in the future.
The resolution also calls for petitioning the UA administration and Arkansas government officials, such as the governor and congressmen, to expand the scope and increasing funding for these programs. ?
The purpose of this legislation is to conquer the funding gap UA students face with healthy collaboration between ASG and the appropriate university and state officials, according to the resolution. ?
Data reveals that the annual average funding gap at the UA for about 4,000 students who completed federal financial aid forms has risen steadily since 2005, according to the resolution. ?
At the meeting, the Senate also passed a bill to film, broadcast and archive ASG Senate meetings. ?
Filming and broadcasting ASG meetings on UATV will enable the student body to understand ASG, evaluate the actions of their elected representatives and increase the potentiality for accountability, according to the bill. ?
The archiving of ASG meeting footage would provide a valuable resource for future ASG members and a historical record, which could provide academic value and potential sentimental value to ASG senators later in life, according to the bill. ?
The Senate also discussed "A Safer Bus Resolution."?
ASG does not support or condone the consumption, use and/or possession of alcohol on UA transit buses, according to the resolution. ?
The resolution calls for ASG to request that the UA Transit and Parking Department prohibit the consumption or use of alcoholic beverages onboard UA Razorback Transit buses. ?
