After a pair of meets away from campus, the Arkansas track and field team finally returns home for the weekend to host the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville.
The Hogs are having a successful season and look to improve on their good start with a solid showing in front of the home fans at glorious John McDonnell Field.
The fact that the venue and event is named after the Arkansas head coach is fitting, seeing that he has led Arkansas to 42 national championships, which is the most in any sport by any coach in the history of inter-collegiate athletics.
McDonnell has also led the Hogs to 83 conference titles overall since 1974.
This weekend's meet is one of three meets that Arkansas will host on the year, and the Hogs are looking to secure more regional-qualifying marks on their home turf.
Other events that Arkansas will host this season include the Arkansas Twilight on May 2 and the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships May 30-31.
Events will commence at 12 p.m. on Friday with the decathlon, and immediately after, the heptathlon will follow at 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, the running prelims will start at 10 a.m., running finals at 3:30 p.m., and field events will kick off the day at 8 a.m.
In addition to the extra exposure that comes to Arkansas for hosting a meet, Cox Sports Television plans to air a tape-delayed broadcast of the meet. It will be shown on Sunday, April 27, at 11 a.m.
There will be no shortage of competition during the weekend as schools from all over the country will be in Fayetteville vying for supremacy.
These schools include Air Force, Arkansas-Little Rock, Brown, Harding, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Missouri, Missouri Southern, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Texas Tech and Tulsa.
In Arkansas' previous two meets, the Hogs have already earned nine regional-qualifying marks and one NCAA automatic-qualifying mark, which was James Strang's time of 28:38.62 in the 10,000M.
Some events that Arkansas runners will need to perform well in this weekend are the 100 meters, the 5,000 meters, the 4x100 meters, the long and triple jumps, and the middle distances, which include the 800 and the 1,500 meters.
The women's track and field heads to the Mt. SAC relays as well as helping host the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville.
Denise Bargiachi, Dacia Barr, Megan Jackson, Christine Kalmer, Jillian Rosen and Catherine White took part in the Mt. SAC distance competition last night and will again race Friday.
Meanwhile, the Lady'Back sprinters, jumpers, and throwers get to stick around these parts to take part in the home meet Saturday.
