The Gypsy, a Dickson Street music venue, will be shutting its doors this coming Saturday for good. The final show will take place Friday and Saturday night, featuring future national superstar and Fayetteville citizen Benjamin Del Shreve. In addition, a number of Fayetteville musicians will bid farewell to the Gypsy.
"The Gypsy has treated us like family since we moved to town," Shreve said. "It's been a great bar and a great venue. We're going to give it one hell of a farewell show."
The complete farewell show line-up will include Bright Shade of White, The Eoff Brothers, Qland, Kucera, and Kin starting at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. At 8 p.m., the Battle of the Bands will feature four dynamic Fayetteville bands: Marca, Dreamfast, Open Addiction, and Apartment 5. While a local band will be crowned the Battle of the Bands winner, Lauren de Miranda, Matt Jones and The Primes will be rocking the Gypsy on the inside stage starting at 10 p.m.
While Friday's farewell line-up is jam packed with musicians, Saturday's line-up will showcase Shreve and another up-and-coming Fayetteville soft rock sensation, Jonathan Taylor Rose.
It's too bad the Gypsy is only shutting it's doors once. A line-up like this only come in a moment like this.
Although music venues have come and gone, The Gypsy has been a fixture in the Fayetteville music scene for many years. The demise of this musical monument on Dickson got me thinking about the demise of several other venues and bands, both locally and nationally, over the first half of 2008. If bands and venues keep dropping like they have at the beginning of this year, then it's going to be a long year for booking agents, aspiring musicians and pretty much every fan all over then nation.
One of the most underrated bands in America decided to go on indefinite hiatus (a fancy phrase musicians use for "breaking up") about a month ago. Pennsylvania natives The Starting Line will play their final show this coming summer and then concentrate on other aspects of the music industry (side bands, producing, etc.). I predict that TSL lead singer Kenny Vasoli's side project, Person L, will garner moderate success in the rock scene. They have already scored a spot on this year's Bonnaroo festival.
