UA band programs ready to shine

The UA Concert Band and Wind Symphony will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Baum Walker Hall at the Walton Arts Center.

With both of these groups performing several pieces for the final concerts of the year, the event is sure to entertain a large crowd.

The Concert Band will commence with a grand program of works.

The 66-piece ensemble, under the direction of Jeremy Pratchard, will perform "In Storm and Sunshine" by J.C. Heed; "Temple Dance" from "Olav Trgyason op. 50" by Edvard Greig; "As Summer Was Just Beginning" by Larry Daehn; "Symphonic Dance Number 3 Fiesta" by Clifton Williams; and Peter I. Tchaikovsky's "Finale" from "Symphony No. 6," according to the press release.

Pratchard earned his bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Oklahoma and his master's degree in percussion performance from Texas Tech University, according to the music department's Web site.

In addition to conducting the Concert Band, Pratchard is the assistant director of the Razorback Marching Band, director of the Lady Hogwild volleyball and basketball pep bands, and assists with several UA percussion ensembles, according to the Web site.

Following the Concert Band's performance, the UA Wind Symphony will take the stage.

The Wind Symphony is a group of select students dedicated to music who performs the highest level of music literature, according to the band Web site.

The 70-member ensemble will perform "Cityscape" by Scott Boerma; "Sinfonietta" by Ingolf Dahl; "Linden Lea" by Ralph Vaughan Williams; "Concerto for Marimba" by David Gillingham; and "Wild Nights!" by Frank Ticheli, according to the press release.

The symphony is under the direction of W. Dale Warren, who joined the UA faculty in 1991 and has conducted many ensembles on campus, according to the music department's Web site.

He earned his bachelor's in music education from Austin Peay State University and his master's from the University of Kentucky, according to the Web site.

In addition to conducting the Wind Symphony, Warren serves as associate professor of music and teaches both undergraduate and graduate level music education classes.

The symphony will also feature guest artist She-e Wu on marimba, who will also join in to perform the Gillingham piece.

Wu is an internationally renowned marimbist and percussion performer, according to the press release.

She is originally from Taiwan and obtained both her bachelor's degree and master's degree in music from the University of North Texas, according to her Web site.

Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission for UA students is $1, $10 general admission and $5 for senior citizens.
