Tomorrow night, the glitz and glamour of the Grammys will hit Fayetteville as the most talented and popular musicians of Northwest Arkansas come together for the biggest night in local music - the 13th annual Northwest Arkansas Music Awards. The awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. at the Dickson Theater, but a special private reception for musicians, special guests and members of the press will start at 6:30 p.m. in the theater.

This year's masters of ceremonies will be Robert Cochran, the Arkansas music historian and director of the Center for Arkansas and Regional Studies, and Kyle Kellams, KUAF news director, according to a press release.

The 2008 NAMA awards will feature 18 categories, including Band of the Year and Album of the Year and categories in Indie Rock, Modern Rock, Rock, Blues, Metal, Singer/Songwriter for male and female, Country, Jam/Funk, Jazz, and Hip-Hop. In addition, there will be a Hall of Fame award given to performers who have won at least three NAMA awards. This year's inductees are singer-songwriter Effron White, blues band Ocie Fisher and the Hipp Doggs, and jam band Flipoff Pirates, according to the press release.

The musicians will arrive in the Grammy-style tradition. Nominated musicians will arrive by limousine, pause for taped interviews on the red carpet outside the theater and be assisted on the red carpet by the Northwest Arkansas Rollergirls, according to the press release.

However, the arrival of the nominated musicians is not the only glitzy aspect of the NAMA awards.

"A lot of people like to dress up for this event," said Susan Porter, editor of the Free Weekly, who helps put on the NAMA awards. However, other people also seem to dress down for the event, she said.

The NAMA committee nominates musicians based on the number of shows played in the area and popularity in every category, and the winners are based on an online poll, Porter said.

The NAMA award itself is an award certificate, Porter said.
